Douglas W. Truxillo is a shareholder and has practiced Admiralty and Maritime Law with Onebane Law Firm since 1977. Doug graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1975. He obtained his J.D. from Louisiana State University Law School in 1976, graduating second in his class and as a member of the Order of the Coif. He started his legal career serving as a law clerk to the renowned maritime judge, Honorable Edwin F. Hunter, Jr., of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana in Lake Charles. After completing a one-year clerkship, he joined Onebane Law Firm.

Doug handles maritime cases in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi in both Federal and State Court. He has been admitted on a pro hac vice basis in federal cases throughout the United States over the past 45 years. Doug’s practice has focused on civil litigation in state and federal courts in maritime and oilfield jury and non-jury cases, including interpretation and coverage review of P&I, Hull, CGL and Employer’s Liability Insurance policy, in addition to acting as local counsel in numerous contract, patent, trademark, labor and healthcare litigation cases in federal court. He has been involved in and assisted clients with the negotiation of oilfield master service contracts, vessel charters, commercial shipbuilding, ship sales, as well as mortgage transactions.

In addition to his maritime practice, Doug has engaged in litigation on behalf of providers and insurers against Department of Health agencies on both Medicare and Medicaid claims. He has acted as local counsel in federal litigation with claims involving trademark and patent. Doug has also served as the legal adviser to the Association of Diving Contractors International, Inc. since 1991.

Doug has had the honor of serving as the 2022-2023 Chair of the ABA TIPS Admiralty and Maritime Law Committee. He is a member of the FBA Admiralty Section since its inception. He served as FBA Chapter President on two separate occasions as well. Doug is also a Proctor with the Maritime Law Association. Over the past 40 years, Doug has co-chaired various maritime seminars as well. He is a frequent speaker on the topic of oilfield and maritime contracts and litigation at forums hosted by law schools, universities, bar associations, and trade and business organizations.

Doug has been a classical, folk, rock, blues, and finger-style guitarist for most of his life. In the rare instances where you have been placed on hold when calling in, you are listening to music composed and played by Doug.
